She touched her chest and pressed it hard but the hurt in there did not decrease. It was suffocating her.

Lin Chu turned to look at Yan Beicheng’s cold profile. He must know that she was looking at him but he made no attempt to look back, there was only the hard outline of his jaw.

Lin Chu opened her mouth but there was a sudden pain in her chest, which stopped her from voicing out. She had never felt so terrible before, and all she faced was Yan Beicheng’s cold attitude toward her.

She turned her gaze away in depression and started the engine without saying a word. As she stepped on the gas pedal, she realized a problem, “Urm… Ning Bai’s school is…”

Lin Chu had never felt so nervous before, even when she was taking her exams, including result announcements, high school admissions results and even finding a job after graduation. She had never felt such apprehension as this when Yan Beicheng was ignoring her.

Although, Yan Beicheng would not be ignoring her over this, would he?

She had never yearned so much to hear Yan Beicheng’s voice, to hear him talk to her.

Yan Beicheng still did not look at her but replied coldly, “Jixia Academy.”

Lin Chu almost laughed out in delight because Yan Beicheng talked to her. She felt much more relieved as she hurriedly drove towards Jixia Academy.

However, Yan Beicheng never spoke another word to her after they got on the road. For the first time, Lin Chu boldly tried to find a few topics of conversation, but she could not get Yan Beicheng to react to her. After a while, Lin Chu gave up trying to get Yan Beicheng to say something.

The situation continued until she stopped the car at the parking lot of Jixia Academy and the two of them got out of the car and walked towards the school.

Lin Chu gave a dry laugh after entering the school and tried again, “I didn’t expect Ningbai to already be in elementary school. I thought he was still in kindergarten when I first saw him.”

Yan Beicheng looked at her coolly and then turned his gaze away as he walked towards the front. Suddenly, someone pulled at the corner of his suit. While the pull was not strong enough to stop him from going forward, it was enough to make him feel a little resistance.

Yan Beicheng turned back and saw both of Lin Chu’s hands holding on to the corner of his suit. She lowered her head like a child who knew she had done something wrong. She kept blinking her eyes nervously, her long eyelashes flashing as they opened and closed. Yan Beicheng sighed helplessly at her look of grievance as she tried to make up with him. It was a sigh so quiet that the nervous Lin Chu was unable to catch.

Lin Chu puckered her lips as she took a breath and said, “I’m sorry.”

Yan Beicheng lowered his eyes and did not say anything. Lin Chu took a careful look at him. It was still difficult to figure out what he was thinking through his expression. She decided to bite the bullet and said, “My words just now weren’t carefully thought out. I had no intention to insult you. I just felt like the gap between us is just too big and I’ve never thought about this. I’ve never actually thought about being with someone who is rich and has a high social level. I just want to be with someone whom I have an affinity with, to love and to hold, and to live an ordinary but happy life together, sprinkled with some arguments in between.”

“I’ve never thought of you as a philanderer. I am aware that you are a very responsible person. Come to think of it, I’m the one who isn’t such a good person. It could be because of my lack of self-esteem that I feel I could never match up to you. Besides that, I’m also really scared about the situations I may have to face if we’re together. Our family backgrounds are just too different. I don’t understand your family’s requirement for a daughter-in-law. Would they be able to like someone such as me, who has nothing? As for the Lin family, I know what they would think about it. They wouldn’t want me to do better than them. If they can’t stop me, then they would hope to make use of you through me. If we were together, I can’t allow this impure relationship of benefits to come between us. Which is why I don’t have the courage to face the pressure coming from our families.”

“It’s just me feeling inferior and also being a coward. Yan Beicheng, I’m not worthy of you not because you’re not good enough, it’s me that’s not good enough. And so, Yan Beicheng, can you please not ignore me this way? Can you talk to me, please? I was wrong. I feel hurt when you act this way,” Lin Chu lifted her head and looked seriously at Yan Beicheng.

Yan Beicheng held her face with his hands. His long fingers, which felt a little coarse and slightly wet, gently caressed the back of her neck. She trembled as his thumbs touched her ears and they turned red, spreading the blush to her entire face.

“Lin Chu, have you noticed that you were being coquettish to me when you told me not to ignore you,” Yan Beicheng pinched her earlobes lightly. His cold face melted into gentleness as his dark eyes gazed deeply and adoringly at Lin Chu.
