I thought that the timing of the system message was random, but after considering the fact that I have been accumulating experience so far, it wasn’t that strange to me anymore.
After obtaining my first job, I killed a lot of monsters with Kim Hyun-Sung and after entering this dungeon, I continuously killed more of them. It was to the point that I thought that the system message arrived a bit late.
The funny thing was that a new job opened after I killed Yoo Seok-Woo.
‘Even if I kill a person.’
It seemed that killing somebody would give me experience, and I was sure that there were more ways to gain experience. There was also a good chance that I would get experience in everything that I do.
The system was digitizing my contribution, last hits, and of course, it was difficult to obtain proper data, but I noticed that the people back at the shelter had stat changes over time. The intelligence stat could be increased through a variety of methods and by thinking and using magic, the magic stat would increase. This also applied to the other stats like stamina and agility, so I thought maybe this job was similar.
[A new job has opened. Please select the job you think you’ll need.]
[Please read the jobs that have been opened.]
[Summoner - Rare Rank]
[Magic Lancer - Rare Rank]
[Black Mage - Rare Rank]
[Alchemist - Rare Rank]
[Fire Mage - Rare Rank]
‘There’s a lot of choices.’
I was a bit worried that there was going to be a trickster-like job. Fortunately, there weren’t any of them, so I felt very relieved.
I wanted to praise the system for giving me rare-ranked jobs. I didn’t look into the details, but I didn’t see any bad jobs. More than that, the fact that the Leader job wasn’t there made me feel really relieved.
I was sure that it wouldn’t happen, but I was worried that Park Deok-Gu, who found out about my previous job, was going to turn into a parrot again and yell out Leader like before.
I didn’t tell him back then, but he was good at appealing and because of what he said, I had to think about the job at least three times. It was to the point that I thought about what would happen if I did choose that job. I was a bit thankful for the fact that I had been completely freed from the Leader job.
Since I couldn’t keep reading my status window, I had no choice but to skim through it. When I looked, there was a variety of information.
[Summoner - Rare Rank]
[A Summoner doesn’t fight at the frontline. A Summoner fights by summoning a Familiar, a Spirit, or through a Mystical Beast Contract. Later, the player will be given the option to change jobs into a Tamer, a Spiritual Sorcerer, or a Mystic Beast Summoner. The player’s stamina and intelligence will be increased by one point and the magic stat will be increased by two points.]
‘Not bad.’
I really liked the Summoner job because I could summon a mystical beast or a spirit to fight for me. Usually, affinity was mentioned to be necessary for this kind of job in novels and games. I wasn’t sure if I had that talent, but seeing as how it was listed here, the system probably thought that it went well with my nature.
[Magic Lancer - Rare Rank]
[This is a mid-ranged job that allows the player to use their magic and lance at the same time. The Magic Lancer controls the balance of the battlefield and since they’re able to use their magic and spear at the same time, their job has a direct effect in small battles. The player will obtain intermediate knowledge about the lance and magic. Agility and magic stats will be increased by two points.]
[Black Mage - Rare Rank]
[This is a long-ranged job that allows the player to use black magic. Black magic is a new type of magic that will completely reverse the common knowledge of magic that the player possesses. The player may experience opposition from some religious groups because they believe that this kind of power comes from the devil, but the job’s destructive power is overwhelmingly more powerful than other jobs. The player will learn basic black magic spells. Magic stats will be increased by four points.]
I decided to pass on the Magic Lancer job because I knew that I wouldn’t be able to contribute as much in frontal battles. Since my strength and agility stats were low, swinging a lance wouldn’t be effective. However, the Black Mage job was a different story. The fact that it would increase the magic stat by four points was tempting and it even said that it would completely reverse my common knowledge of magic.
“Hm.”
However, I had to think about it thoroughly because the system message said that I might experience opposition from religious groups. After the tutorial was over, if I had to go to a fantasy world based on the Middle Ages, then a crazy religious group may follow me to the ends of the world. I definitely didn’t want that since I was in a situation where I had to be in the safest position.
[Alchemist - Rare Rank]
[The alchemist basically studies and does research about magical chemistry. They draw sigils and spells and are always looking for new ways and developments in magic. The player will learn homunculus alchemist knowledge and basic knowledge about alchemy. Later, the player can change their job into a Potion Maker, an Alchemy Mage, or a Homunculus Expert. The player’s intelligence and magic stats will increase by two points.]
[Fire Mage - Rare Rank]
[Among all types of elemental mages, the Fire Mage’s destructive power is second to none. The Fire Mage is a long-ranged job that supports allies through the use of strong firepower. Their spells consume a lot of mana but the unexpected firepower will surprise both enemies and allies alike. Later, the player can change into an Explosive Mage, a Magical Bomb Expert, and other related jobs. The magic stat will be increased by five points.]
Obviously, I was going to pass on the Fire Mage job. Still, it was worth thinking about since it increased the magic stat by five points, and the fact that it could release unexpected firepower caught my attention. I could probably use the job’s spells twice and even though I could clearly see the disadvantage, the job didn’t seem all that bad.
‘Alchemist?’
Honestly, alchemist didn’t sound like such a bad job. I even thought that this job was the most suitable job for me since my intelligence stat was higher than my magic stat from the get-go. Compared to the other jobs, the combat ability wasn’t that great, but after seeing homunculus, alchemy magic, and the suspicious job called Potion Maker, I thought maybe it could make up for my lack of magic power.
Magic Lancer was the one that I could definitely exclude from the list. The other jobs, on the other hand, weren’t bad, but they had their own pros and cons.
I thought it would be easier than picking my first job, but I was starting to feel like an idiot. The choice that I was about to make now was more important than my first choice. It was similar to picking a major.
I started getting a headache at the thought that this choice could possibly decide my position on Continent once we started to move forward from this tutorial. Choosing my next job wasn’t an urgent matter, so it would be best for me to think about it later. Still, I started to get worried because out of the many jobs listed, I wasn’t sure which one I should delve into.
That was when I heard a voice beside me.
“Hyung-nim?” Park Deok-Gu called out.
“Oh, sorry, Deok-Gu. We should go find Ha-Yan” I said.
“Did you get a new job or something?” he asked.
“Yeah, I didn’t expect it. I guess you gain experience even when you kill a person,” I told him.
“Groan…”
Park Deok-Gu kept his silence. He didn’t seem very shocked so I felt relieved. I was worried that maybe he was having other thoughts, but luckily, it didn’t seem like it. All this time, I said that he had muscles for brains, but I guess he had his own problems to deal with too, and of course, it was the same for me.
I tried to avert my gaze, but I probably wouldn’t be able to forget what happened today. Park Deok-Gu seemed like he decided to accept the situation, but the strange silence must have been awkward for him because he started talking again.
“I’m not sure if that dude Kim Hyun-Sung and noonim are safe.”
“I’m sure they are. I’m certain Kim Hyun-Sung is safe and I’m sure nothing happened to Ha-Yan” I said.
“How are you so sure? Is it because of that thing you call magic?” he asked.
“Something like that. The farther away they are, the more difficult it is for me to detect them, but once you obtain magic, you’ll understand what I mean,” I explained.
Of course, it wasn’t because of my magic that I was certain of their safety. Their stats and nature were the answer. One of them was a regressor and the other was a genius mage and was also a monster. It was even possible that they were already done with their tasks and were on their way here.
As expected, when we started walking for a little bit, I saw Jung Ha-Yan walking towards us. As soon as she saw me and Park Deok-Gu, she widened her eyes and ran towards us. The sight of her running in our direction was kind of cute, but after seeing the blood on her sleeve, I didn’t find it in my heart to be happy when I saw her.
“Oppa…oppa! Oppa! Oppa!” she called out.
When Jung Ha-Yan jumped into my arms, I thought about how aggressive she was from her usual self, but after thinking about how worried she was about me, I felt a bit better.
“Did you get hurt anywhere? Are you in pain? Are you okay now? Sob…Yoo Seok-Woo…what…what happened to that man…”
“He’s dead,” I told her.
“Ohhhh, that’s a relief,” she said.
I didn’t think that Jung Ha-Yan was going to be shocked by the news, but she immediately accepted it. I wasn’t sure if I was seeing things, but she looked a bit disappointed.
Rather than asking questions, she smiled while releasing a sigh of relief and Park Deok-Gu must have sensed that something was strange because he was examining Jung Ha-Yan closely.
“Noonim, where…did you go?” Park Deok-Gu asked.
“Oh…um…I unintentionally…”
For a moment, Jung Ha-Yan looked as if the cat got her tongue because she probably didn’t think of an excuse on her way here.
She did scream a lot while I was lying on the ground, so I was assuming that she didn’t have the luxury to think about any explanations, but I guess she had the time to tidy herself up because she wanted to look good in front of me.
After seeing her slightly flustered face, I thought that I should help her out this time too, so I spoke in her place. “You left to go help Mr. Hyun-Sung, right?”
“That’s not it, oppa. I-It’s not like that. I’m not interested in him at all…I just…” she said
“What?”
“It wasn’t because I was worried about Mr. Hyun-Sung,” she said.
She was overreacting more than I thought.
Jung Ha-Yan seemed like she didn’t want me to misunderstand that she was interested in Kim Hyun-Sung, but of course that wasn’t my intention when I asked.
“I was just…really angry…” she continued.
“Oh…”
“I was really mad at Kim Jae-Jun…so I did it without realizing it,” she said, finishing her sentence.
The truth was Yoo Seok-Woo was the first one that stabbed me with his sword, but she didn’t see it clearly because seeing Kim Jae-Jun punch and stab me in the back with a dagger had been more memorable to her.
She must have recalled that moment because she started crying again. Park Deok-Gu must have realized the fact that Jung Ha-Yan was going to release her large tears in three seconds, so he looked back at me with an awkward expression. His flustered reaction didn’t fit the nickname, the Casanova of Gangwon-do.
‘Love Doctor my ass…’
“It’s okay, it’s okay, it’s okay, I think I know what you want to say noonim because I immediately wanted to run after them too…hyung-nim, don’t just stand there and do…” Park Deok-Gu said.
“Sob. I kept…I kept thinking about what happened…”
“Noonim, everything is okay now, so please s-stop crying. It’s all over…everyone is safe and hyung-nim’s wound healed,” Park Deok-Gu told her.
“Sob…”
“Jeez…hyung-nim! Please comfort noonim…her eyes are swollen…what should…” he said while panicking.
I couldn’t help but laugh when I saw him quietly looking at me and begging me to comfort her. It felt like my light headache was starting to go away.
In the end, I did what he asked and when I lightly hugged her, I saw her shoulders moving up and down.
“I’m sorry. I’m sorry, oppa…” she said.
I wasn’t sure what she was apologizing about, but I patted her back.
“It’s okay,” I said.
“I’m sorry, oppa. Sob.”
“Ahem.”
I was actually thankful because it felt like the situation ended nicely, and I started feeling better when I was feeling dirty earlier.
When I glanced over at Park Deok-Gu while comforting Jung Ha-Yan, I saw him with a funny, bright smile.
‘That pig…’
No matter how much I thought about the situation, I still found it absurd. Of course, Jung Ha-Yan was calmer compared to before, but he was still smiling while looking at me in a calm manner. It was obvious, but the smile that he had wasn’t a warm smile that came out because he was watching me and Jung Ha-Yan. It was more of a vulgar and dirty smile.
‘Was this part of his design…’
It was to the point that I was able to sort of relate to Yoo Seok-Woo, who died by my hands.
‘That…’
“You two look good together, noonim,” Park Deok-Gu said.
Park Deok-Gu, Gangwon-do’s Love Doctor.
This was the moment when I thought about the possibility of this title being true.
