Zhang Fan was truly trying hard to join Shao Hua’s family. Right when he got off from work, he would first give Shao Hua’s mother a phone call, and then he would go to pick up Shao Hua from her workplace. After this continued for a week, Shao Hua’s mother began to call Zhang Fan as well to ask him what he wanted to eat for dinner. This made Shao Hua rather displeased—previously, her mother would always ask her what she wanted to eat, but now that her mother was asking Zhang Fan what he wanted instead, she felt that she was no longer being spoiled!
Chasu City Hospital began its training sessions for the intern doctors to help them pass the medical licensing exam. These training sessions were scheduled to last slightly more than a month. Superintendent Ouyang started with a speech, which was followed by speeches from the vice superintendents. Basically, they all said the same thing: the intern doctors absolutely had to pass the medical licensing exam. Any intern doctor who failed to pass the exam for two years in a row would be instantly fired, with no exceptions. Although Superintendent Ouyang had also mentioned that she would fire intern doctors who failed to pass the exam within two years when she just had been promoted to superintendent, nobody had taken her seriously at the time. But this time, the superintendent and vice superintendents were all announcing this together, which gave a tremendous amount of pressure to the intern doctors who had failed the medical licensing exam in the previous year.
Originally, an attending physician from the cardiology department was scheduled to give the first class to the intern doctors. However, the cardiology department suddenly received an emergency patient in dire condition, so Superintendent Ouyang allowed the attending physician to leave. Zhang Fan was supposed to teach the second class, which would basically be his advice to the intern doctors on how to pass the exam. The first class was supposed to be on the basics of giving patients physical examinations. Well, there was no helping it. All the young intern doctors had come to the training session, but the first class’s teacher had to suddenly leave, so Zhang Fan was suddenly asked to take over the first class as well.
Superintendent Ouyang announced, “Let us have the top-ranking student from last year’s medical license exam say a few words.”
After she said this, the head of the hospital administrative department directly handed the microphone to Zhang Fan. Although Zhang Fan hadn’t prepared himself to teach a class on the basics of physical examinations, this topic was simple enough, so teaching it would be no problem at all for him.
He confidently walked up to the front, nodded slightly at the superintendent and vice superintendents, and said, “The leaders view the training for the young doctors with great importance. Since they’re sending me out first, please allow me to demonstrate the basics of physical examination as well as the standardized movements for the exam. Let us all learn together.”
Zhang Fan then began his class. He walked over to the side of a previously prepared anatomy model and began to demonstrate the basics of physical examination.
Meanwhile, as Superintendent Ouyang watched Zhang Fan give his class, she commented to the surgeon vice superintendent, “His logic is clear and his movements are well standardized. I’ve heard that Little Zhang is considered an excellent talent in the surgery departments?”
“Yeah. He’s pretty good at both orthopedic and general surgery. In the orthopedic surgery departments, he’s on the level of the doctors with the second-highest certification. In the general surgery departments, he’s on the level of veteran attending physicians. He really is a talented surgeon.” The surgeon vice superintendent’s relationship with Superintendent Ouyang had recently improved quite a bit.
Superintendent Ouyang’s management philosophy was that she would leave management of specialized fields to the professionals. Thus, she allowed the surgeon vice superintendent to be completely in charge of the surgery departments. He was granted full control over all decisions regarding medical equipment and medicine. However, he would also be held fully responsible if any problems arose. This was why he was now fearfully respectful and obedient to Superintendent Ouyang.
After Zhang Fan finished his demonstration on how to perform a physical examination, Superintendent Ouyang immediately started clapping her hands. She then stated, “If all of you can reach Doctor Zhang’s level, it’ll be quite easy for everyone to pass the exam!”
Now that Zhang Fan was finished with the demonstration, it was time for him to test the students individually on their abilities in giving physical examinations. Since all of the intern doctors had already finished their undergraduate studies at a medical school at the minimum, it would really be quite bad if they weren’t even able to perform a simple physical examination.
However, the hospital’s recruitment wasn’t ironclad in its requirements. There were those who had gotten recruited by using connections. This simple test instantly exposed those doctors. There was a certain female doctor who had difficulty with something as basic as locating the thyroid gland. Superintendent Ouyang’s expression darkened; she was acquainted with this female doctor. Ouyang Hong herself had been the one who allowed this female doctor to join the hospital!
After the individual tests for the intern doctors finished, Superintendent Ouyang announced, “Anyone who failed to pass the patient physical examination test just now shall have all of their salary and bonuses for this month deducted. And if those doctors still can’t pass the patient physical examination test after one month, there’s no need for them to remain as doctors anymore. The hospital is no place to slack off and just get by. Slacking off will only lead to major medical incidents, which will probably harm both you as well as the patient.”
There were a few doctors who hadn’t managed to pass the patient physical examination test that Zhang Fan administered. Their expressions were all ashen as they realized that Superintendent Ouyang was absolutely serious. Medical knowledge wasn’t something that could be acquired overnight. Regular study and accumulation were absolutely necessary. If a simple physical examination was already too difficult for you, there were far more difficult questions in the medical field. In real life medical situations, there would always be countless sudden and unexpected situations. If you didn’t accumulate knowledge regularly, and only tried cramming in the last month, it was truly unlikely that you could pass the medical license exam.
After Zhang Fan finished teaching, he received a phone call from Shao Hua right when he returned to the dermatology department. “Are you busy right now?”
“I just finished teaching a class. I’m not busy right now, what’s going on?”
“You’ve even started teaching classes! You really are amazing. I have some good news for you. My bank is giving all of us employees a valuable gift. We’re allowed to choose either a cell phone, a computer, or a single-lens reflex camera. They’re all worth just slightly less than 5000 yuan. I saw that the men’s cell phone looked pretty nice. How about I pick that for you, and you’ll get something nice for free?” Shao Hua’s bank really did have good benefits for its employees. Shao Hua had previously noticed that Zhang Fan’s cell phone was so worn that its color was fading. So, she wanted to get a new cell phone for him, but was worried that he would lose face, so she said it in a joking manner.
“Don’t, cell phones are so useless. All you can do with them is make phone calls. I think that you should choose the single-lens reflex camera. We can do something like photography later in the future.” Zhang Fan had been influenced by Li Hongtu from orthopedic department #1. Li Hongtu really loved to go around everywhere and take photos whenever he had some vacation time, which seemed rather interesting to Zhang Fan.
“The camera that my bank is offering to us is a camera for beginners. Also, do you know that really good lenses for these cameras are very expensive?” Shao Hua spoke in a tiny voice. Zhang Fan didn’t understand anything about cameras, but Shao Hua did.
“Oh! Forget it, then. You should pick the computer.”
“Alright.”
But, in the end, Shao Hua still chose the single-lens reflex camera. After interacting with Zhang Fan for all this time, she had learned already that he basically didn’t have any hobbies. However, since he seemed to enjoy photography, it seemed alright to also buy a nice lens for him to play around with. It wasn’t like life was only about work, after all.
Zhang Fan had now almost finished with his rotation in the dermatology department. Director Gulnazar said that she would treat Zhang Fan to a meal. He had really melded quite well with the dermatology department in this one month. All of the other dermatologists had a good opinion of him. Here in the border province, everyone was more passionate and friendly, especially the ethnic minorities; the dermatologists were mostly exactly ethnic minorities.
It was now almost May 1st, International Labor Day. Superintendent Ouyang approved a seven-day vacation for Zhang Fan because he had done an especially good job with teaching the intern doctors. He wouldn’t even need to be on call for these seven days. He was allowed to play as he pleased!
Zhang Fan honestly would have had no idea how to use these seven days if he had still been single.
During that night at dinner, Zhang Fan told Shao Hua’s mom, “Ma’am, I have a seven-day vacation starting May 1st. How about we all go out together somewhere? Although I’ve been here in this province for two years already, I really haven’t been to many places here.” Since Zhang Fan had decided already that he would pursue Shao Hua seriously, he felt that he should also accept Shao Hua’s family. He figured that her parents didn’t have a very high salary, so it was unlikely that they went out often on family vacations.
“Sheesh! There’re way too many people everywhere because they’re all on vacation. Taking buses and taxis will also be inconvenient, so let’s just forget it. How about you and Shao Hua go have fun someplace nearby? I’m sure that both of you are tired from always working,” Shao Hua’s mother suggested.
Shao Hua was especially delighted to hear this. She was really happy and moved that Zhang Fan had thought to invite her parents out on vacation. She secretly held Zhang Fan’s hand under the table and told her parents, “I also have a seven-day vacation for May 1st. Since Zhang Fan’s inviting us, why don’t we all go somewhere together for once? Mom, Dad, you’re getting older now, so if you don’t take the chance to go on vacation, you might not be able to enjoy vacations like this in the future anymore.”
“Let’s go out on a family vacation then, since Little Zhang is inviting us,” Shao Hua’s father exclaimed in a decisive tone.
“Where do you two want to go? And how about you, Zhang Fan?” Shao Hua asked.
“You guys decide. We’ll go wherever you two youngsters want to go,” Shao Hua’s mother replied.
Zhang Fan was slightly hesitant as he suggested, “How about Kanas Lake?”
“Isn’t Kanas Lake slightly far away? Isn’t it a bit late to be buying tickets at this time?” Shao Hua turned on her computer and began to search for online information about Kanas Lake.
“It’s fine. I can drive everyone there; my car is big enough. We also have plenty of time. Let’s just have fun as we travel. I’m just worried that Sir and Ma’am might not be able to handle the trip.”
“Not a problem, how old do you think we are? We’re still quite young!”
Since a vacation had now been planned, Shao Hua began making all the preparations. Zhang Fan had originally believed that all they needed to bring were some clothes and instant noodles, but he really learned a lot when he saw Shao Hua’s list of everything to bring!
