Chapter 13- Shocked to Surprised!
Yan Mo originally wanted to mobilize Yuan Diao and have him look for herbs and other useful things, but considering the attitude Yuan Shan had after he drew the wood plank, he postponed this plan.
The next three days, Yan Mo was lowkey and stayed in the tent. did not leave any events happening. He Tu came by everyday to watch him and everytime she came she would bring him some food to eat.
The food He Tu brought was a bit more abundant then Cao Ting’s. In addition to meat, there would sometimes be wild fruits and so on. There were times Yan Mo ate fruits that were similar to red dates,
Although Yan Mo never left the tent, it didn’t mean he didn’t do anything inside the tent.
For a better life in the future, and also for the sake of a future escape route, he followed the memories of the body, trying to outline a map of the terrain around the salt mountain.
Near the Yanshan tribe were a few big and small tribes. The details on how many tribes, the youth also could not remember very clearly, could only remember a few well known ones. One of them was the Zhi Tribe, there was also the She Ren Tribe and the Bai Ri Tribe (1).
Besides just having salt in the Yanshan Tribe’s territory, the nearby environment was also not too bad and could basically achieve self-sufficiency. This was probably one of the reasons the Zhi Tribe attacked.
Rumors said that the Zhi Tribe’s territory was the most desolate, causing the people’s nature to be particularly fearless. In the tribe, whether you were a man or women, both could be warriors. When necessarily, they would eat the weakest members of the tribe in order to leave behind the strong.
It is said that the She Ren Tribe lived in an extremely good mountain ravine. Winter was not cold and summer was not hot. The yield from the gorge was also very abundant. In addition there was plenty of clean underground water sources. The passing of the days there was much better compared to the other nearby tribes.
The other tribes were greedy for the She Ren Tribe’s territory, but the She Ren Tribe were good at chasing out snakes. They were specialized in using poison and could also walk underground. In case they are attacked, the entire tribe could fight back forever. It caused the average person to not dare and provoke them.
The Bai Ri Tribe were born in the middle of the grasslands. They were good at riding horses, would come and go like the wind. Good at hunting, the entire tribe had no fixed location. Year after year they would chase after various kinds of cattle and sheep herds. This tribe was also one of the largest customers of the Yanshan Tribe.
The stuff above, in addition to the knowledge he gained on the road from fleeing, and his rough understanding of the Yuan Ji tribe, Yan Mo inferred that these several tribes should live inland. For a dry climate, from morning and evening the difference in temperature was huge. It should be a long distance from the sea, but was also unsure if there was a big and tall mountain range in the middle that separated it.
He just didn’t know if this area belonged to a temperate continental climate, or if it should be considered highland continental climate. He would need to specifically leave and go outside to look at all the plants and animals here to determine.
If this belonged to the highland area, then the vegetation distribution difference would be very big. If it was a temperate climate, then the vegetation would be more than the grasslands and the desert.
Yan Mo did not intent to stay in the Yuan Ji Tribe, because not only was he a slave here, but also because of his future vision. The environment here was not suitable for tribal development. If he wanted to live a better life, then they needed to start from scratch and find a new site.
The primitive society was good for this. Large area, small population, grab it and it’s yours. But he was only one person, if he wanted to leave then everything had to be prepared, otherwise the wild beasts and barbarians on the road would gnaw on him and turn him into dust. It would be better to fool some people with military strength to go with him.
Hunt, build a house, find resources, area to occupy, protect himself; they all needed manpower. One person wanted to live a good life in a primitive society, only if he was a celestial being.
Want to look for a suitable manpower, he must hurry and be able to walk on his own.
For this, Yan Mo was not worried at all.
Only four days and his bone had already grown back. The fifth day, his cut would heal and merely leave behind an irregular red mark.
He had already asked Cao Ting. The people here who got small wounds healed very fast. For big injuries, as long as you didn’t die you were fine. This half month was for the bones to grow back so he could run and jump however he wanted. But for serious injuries like Yan Mo’s, they were usually amputated. Very few could endure through it, even if you could grow good and old, and for a long time.
After understanding this, Yan Mo could put his leg on the ground and walk, but he still tied the wooden planks. Letting Cao Ting carry him was convenient.
Yan Mo didn’t feel like his ability to heal fast was a gift from God, but because God did not want him to waste time healing his body. In short there was only one goal —— Let him make a good transformation!
“Xiao Mo! The hunting team came back! Your master is back!” Cao Ting shouted from outside the tent.
Yan Mo responded with one sound, removed three needles from the Guide’s reward list, and inserted it into the hide bracer on his left hand. Taking things out of the reward list table was too troublesome. Have to call out the rewards page first, finger then also needs to point at the reward you want, then you can remove the desired item you want.
There was no verified method to trick it, causing a certain someone to be resentful. Taking out is so troublesome, what if I quickly need the needles to save a life, can I still make it?
The guide was unreliable, could only rely on oneself. So Yan Mo made himself a bracer to conveniently insert his needles into.
This hide bracer was what he made in the past two days. Because there was no suitable strong string for seams, he did not use the needle. Rather he used a stone to drill into the hide and create a row of four holes, totaling 12 small holes in total. Then used leather ropes to pass through these holes and finally tied it at the ends.
Hopefully this bracer won’t attract anyone’s attention,
Yan Mo looked left and right and was slightly worried. On the wrists of a slave was a pair of beautiful and protective bracers, it seemed a little too dazzling.
Thinking, Yan Mo pulled out the three needles, instead put it in his grass belt around his waist. If he revealed these bracers and no one payed attention, it would not be too late to insert it back in.
Cao Ting lifted the curtain and entered, expression was full of joy. The hunting team coming back meant that Yuan Diao would get a share of fresh meat and fur. As Yuan Diao’s slave, naturally she would also benefit as well. Because there was not that much salt to use to make jerky, when the hunters came back it meant that everyone would have plenty of food to eat for the next two days, even the slaves were included. So whenever the hunting team came back it was a happy event for all of the tribe.
“The hunting team is about to enter the tribe. Today everyone will go to the plaza. I’ll carry you and we can go together. When your master sees you, he will most definitely be happy!”
Yan Mo did not want to greet his youngster master, but he also wanted to know how many people were in this tribe. What was the age and gender distribution like? Therefore he did not reject.
Cao Ting carried Yan Mo on her back and headed towards the plaza.
Almost every tent had people running out of it with smiles on everyone’s faces.
Yan Mo had been here for a few days but it was his first time hearing so much noise, and seeing so many people. There were children constantly yelling and running past him with the adults not even caring.
Some greeted Cao Ting, some thought it was weird she was carrying Yan Mo, but at this time everyone was rushing towards the plaza so no one chased after Cao Ting to inquire what happened.
People kept gathering at the plaza. Yan Mo was carried by Cao Ting right next to her master. Yuan Shan and He Tu were also there. Besides Da He who could not move, her two children were also there.
Cao Ting put Yan Mo down to let him stand on one leg. Yan Mo then faced towards Yuan Diao and company then bent his waist. Towards people with high rankings, the slaves here had two etiquettes: to kneel and bow.
Probably in order to not attract attention, Yuan Diao and them including He Tu, did not pay attention to him.
Yan Mo noticed that behind Yuan Shan and between two children was a big boy. The appearance of the boy did not look like the other people of the Yuan Ji Tribe.
The people in Yuan Ji Tribe were as tall as an ox and big as a horse. The face contours were deep and the eye color was dark while the skin was tanned into a bronze color. This boy was thin and feminine, the skin was white and the eyes were green. One look and you could tell it was a person of two tribes.
“That is Wen Sheng, he was originally a She Ren tribe member. Master Da Shan traded four muskmelons for him.” Cao Ting explained.
So the last time I actually ate a quarter of a slave… Yan Mo was silent.
“Wen Sheng does not like to talk, he a bit gloomy, but personality is very good. If you hang around him then you’ll know.”
Yan Mo nodded his head at Wen Sheng, Wen Sheng nodded back.
There was suddenly a commotion at the front of the plaza, From the distance you could see a large team approaching the tribe.
Someone ran back to them and frenziedly shouted, “A good harvest! A really good harvest! There’s a lot of prey!”
The crowd cheered.
Yan Mo’s gaze swept across the center of the crowd and frowned a bit.
Lots of men, very few women, many adults, very few children. And the elderly was so few that it was astonishing. Actually to call them the elderly, although these people had deep wrinkles, but looking at the bodies they were still healthy. He could only guess from the outside appearance, but maybe the last time he saw the priest, he was the oldest person in the tribe?
This population composition was definitely unreasonable, also not suitable for development.
“The chief, priest and elders have arrived!” Cao Ting dragged Yan Mo, had Yan Mo sit down on the ground, then got down herself.
The crowd separated like when Moses divided the sea. The chief in front, the priest in the middle, and then the elders at the very end entered the plaza.
All the slaves knelt down. He didn’t know if it was intentional or not, but Yuan Diao, Yuan Shan and He Tu blocked Yan Mo who was kneeling on the ground. Cao Ting and Wen Sheng both knelt on either side of the youth.
After waiting for the chief and others to pass by, Cao Ting and Wen Sheng helped Yan Mo and stood up together.
The chief and them stood at the front of the plaza, everyone else stood behind them. No one dared to be in front of them, including the children who didn’t understand.
The huge team in the distance was approaching closer.
Because of the terrain, although Yan Mo stood behind he could still see the entire team.
……. What the fuck?
This was Yan Mo’s first impression of the unit.
He thought it would be a disorganized group of leather skirt wearing barbarians dragging dead animals over their shoulders and backs.
But what is he seeing now?
He unexpectedly saw an army!
And they looked like they went through rigorous training, a fearful disciplined 100 warrior army!
The entire army was made of young and middle aged men. Everyone was wearing a leather skirt. Hand holding a wooden spear, they didn’t wear shoes. Most of their body was bare, but everyone only needed to see them to understand that their bodies was their most powerful weapon!
The sweat gave their bronze and dark skin a glossy look, like they smeared oil on themselves.
The bulge of the their muscles were solid like rock, causing people to suspect that even a wild beast’s claws could not damage them.
Many people had blood and injuries on them, but no one stopped or showed any pain. The people with heavy injuries could not make it back and the people who could come back relied on their own two legs to return to the tribe.
The pace of all the warriors were identical. The entire team was divided into four square arrays. In the middle, guarding the prey were slaves carrying them on their backs or dragging them.
If the slaves dared to slow their pace, there was a supervisor who would immediately whip them.
Although they obviously already reached their own tribe’s territory and reached the middle of the residence, however these rows of soldiers did not relax. The team did not even lose formation.
Enemies can appear anywhere and anytime. They did not have to fight just wild animals, they also needed to battle against other tribe warriors greedy for their harvest. Even if you were back at your house doorstep, you could never relax. Because there were also hunters from the air.
Yan Mo instinctively covered his heart.
Shock to Surprise!
It’s not that he had never seen an even more powerful army, but he also did not think that this primitive tribe unexpectedly already developed a ferocious war weapon.
Actually, an army with an aura of death was not terrible. An individual soldier was strong but not stronger than a team.
But to serve as an army with a terrifying discipline, then they already had a fearful qualification. Moreover the might of their individual soldiers could not be ignored!
His ancestors(2), Yan Mo muttered to himself, he still underestimated these primitive people.

(1) Zhi Tribe = translates to Pig Tribe
She Ren = translates to Snake people
Bai Ri = translates to Worshiping the Sun
(2) His ancestors: a form of swearing. Chinese people use relatives as a way to swear.
T/N: Welp… I made an error Wen Sheng is a guy, not a girl. It didn’t specify what gender he was at the time so I just assumed it was a female. I’ll go fix it….. Nobody saw anything *hides*
